Filming in the UAE
Film and photo producers from all over the world have started to gather in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is the perfect setting for filmmakers and photographers to convey their stories because of its unique combination of beautiful scenery, cutting-edge facilities, and a rich cultural past. We want to show you the advantages of filming and photographing in the United Arab Emirates, covering everything from climate and filming permits to architecture and shooting locations.
Film & Photography Permits
One of the major advantages of producing films and photography in the UAE is the process of obtaining film permits. The government has created a practical process for local and international productions, providing a one-stop-shop through the Dubai Film and TV Commission (DFTC) and Abu Dhabi Film Commission, where locally registered production companies can apply for permits comfortably and well-structured before the production. We can quickly and easily secure permits for shooting at various locations, without unnecessarily complicated procedures. Other than in many other markets, locations are classified and separated into “private” and “public” locations. Public locations are all those locations that are either government-owned or publicly owned. Those locations usually do not require payment of a location fee to obtain a filming permit. Private locations, on the other hand, will charge a predetermined location fee for filming in or at the location. Filming permits also only cover ground filming and photography. Aerial filming permits filming with drones or helicopters are more complex. While they can be obtained, the process is more complex and requires various documentation and a longer time window.
Weather
The UAE boasts a warm and sunny climate for most of the year, making it an ideal destination for filming outdoors. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, filmmakers can count on reliable weather conditions for their productions. During the hotter summer month filming outside is not necessarily advisable but it is possible. With a large variety of studios from smaller studios up to Hollywood-size stages, there are enough alternatives to film when the summer heat kicks in. The relatively mild winters in the UAE provide a comfortable shooting environment and great lighting conditions in the cities and in the more remote locations.
People & Culture
The UAE is a melting pot of cultures, with a diverse population hailing from more than 200 different countries. This multiculturalism offers filmmakers access to a wide variety of talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The local film industry is supported by a growing pool of skilled professionals, including directors, cinematographers, and production staff, who can contribute to high-quality production. The rich cultural heritage of the UAE provides filmmakers with a unique opportunity to explore a diverse range of stories, themes, and locations. From the traditional Bedouin and trading hub lifestyle to the cosmopolitan city life, the UAE offers a wealth of inspiration for film projects. Additionally, the government has shown a strong commitment to supporting the arts, with various initiatives promoting photography as well as local and international cinema.
Architecture
The UAE's stunning architecture provides an extraordinary backdrop for film productions. From the iconic Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, to the traditional wind towers in Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood, Dubai offers a mix of modern and historic architectural marvels. Meanwhile, the sleek skyline of Abu Dhabi, featuring the Etihad Towers and the Louvre Abu Dhabi, adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to any film production. But not only the men-made is what makes this country unique. The various awe-inspiring sights of nature are a welcome addition to any filmmaker’s location scout. From the wide variety of desert areas with their different sand colors to the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah or the Mangroves of Abu Dhabi - the UAE offers a range of natural beauty that’s unique and inspirational.
